An art show staged around a concert that takes place in a boxing ring? That's not your typical First Friday fare.
At first glance at the show poster, one might mistake the event as being some kind of Battle Royal between bands and promoters. If only.
New Originals: Collections, Champs, Champaign is an art and music extravaganza that features works of local visual artists that have been collected by local music scene fixtures such as Platform Booking's Patrick Kendrick, former B-Side owner Ben Cater, Sasha Turner and Leah Bickerton.
Some of the artists whose work will be on display include Gabriel Brown, Ruben Villarreal, Brad Delay, Joe Preston, Dean Reiner, Justin Walter, Ryan Koontz and many more.
Since the majority of the art is collected from the personal stash of the presenters, it won't be available for purchase, the exception being the of works by newcomer Jeremy Vermilion, who is the night's First Friday featured artist.
In addition to the visual art, a multi-genre lineup of music groups -- everything from prog-rock to hip-hop -- will take turns rocking the ring, as the event is held in a boxing gym. The bill consists of Belt of Vapor, Jaeda, Please Draw In Me, and Ze Krau.
While bands perform inside the squared circle surrounded by some legendary pieces of local art, DJ Likes Girls will be spinning an eclectic blend throughout the event, which is a fundraiser for Community-Minded Enterprises.
The bell rings at 6 p.m. on Friday, April 2, at Spokane Boxing, 1826 E. Sprague. Suggested donation is $5, all ages welcome.
