Here's this week's High Five club picks from the The Som Show, as it appears in the Entertainment Spokane weekly e-newsletter.
AFI - Platinum selling hardcore punk revivalist AFI swings through town with its now album in tow, a quasi-concept piece titled "Crash Love." It's dark, personal, political, and completely uncompromising, with only hints at the dense arrangements, electronics and overdubs from previous works such as "Sing The Sorrow" and "Decemberunderground." Hear it live when AFI comes with Ceremony at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, January 21, at The Knitting Factory Concert House, 919 W. Sprague Ave.
A. A. Bondy - Former frontman for '90s buzz band Verbena, A. A. Bondy has spent the last decade re-inventing himself as one of the premiere voices in alt-country and Americana. His solo debut, "American Hearts" was critically acclaimed for its poignant lyrics and soulful, stripped down songwriting. Bondy's 2009 followup, "When The Devil's Loose," builds on that same level of craftsmanship with the addition of full instrumentation. Get a taste when Bondy arrives with support from local favorite Karli Faibanks at 7 p.m. on Monday, January 25, at The Blvd., 230 W. Riverside Ave. Cost: $8, all ages welcome.
Bowerbirds - For more indie-folk and Americana sounds catch North Carolina's Bowerbirds with Spokane's Kevin Long at 7 p.m. on Friday, January 22, at Empyrean Coffee House, now located in the former Big Dipper space, 171 S. Washington St. Cost: $8 in advance, $11 at the door.
Ben Jorgens - Local indie-dance rock artists Ben Jorgens and Nick team up for an AFI after party at 9 p.m. on Thursday, January 21, at The Blvd., 230 W. Riverside Ave. Cost: $5; 18-and-older welcome.
Peter Parker - The Som Show Presents Whammy Wednesday DJ showcase continues tonight at 9 p.m. at Sunset Junction, 1801 W. Sunset Blvd., with hipster grooves from DJ Peter Parker. Cost: Free.
